COCKROACHES are primitive creatures which have remained largely unchanged for millions of years...

They will eat virtually anything... food spills, faecal matter, soap, hair, paper etc. Ingested bacteria can survive in the cockroach's digestive system for months.

As cockroaches will vomit and defecate on food it is thought that diseases may be transmitted to humans. The proteins in cockroach saliva and waste can also cause allergies and aggravate asthma.

There are over 3500 cockroach varieties worldwide. The most common ones in Australia are the German (small, brown), American (large, black) and Oriental (medium size, dark brown to black) cockroaches.

Female cockroaches lay 10 - 40 eggs at a time. On average, the female can lay around 30 batches of eggs in her lifetime. The hatched young look the same as adult cockroaches, but smaller and without wings. Depending on the conditions and type, a cockroach can live for up to 12 months. These insects are cold-blooded and thrive in warm, humid conditions.

Cockroach infestations can be treated with a combination of good hygiene practices and insecticides.
